Índice – Patterns of the World

ReCreate produziu o ReCreate produced Índice — Panel 7 using reused advertising canvas, selecting strips of different widths to create an illusory perspective. This allows the viewer’s gaze to move through planes that stretch and contract. The variation in widths emphasises vertical movement and gives the pattern a sense of dematerialisation. The piece therefore becomes a visual field that invites contemplation.

Each of the seven panels in the series pays tribute to traditional handcraft techniques. Índice — Panel 7, however, was intentionally presented last in the exhibition. Its name points to a new beginning: a new book, a new story for ReCreate. The choice of the final position reinforces its dual nature — both a conclusion and an opening.

During the making process, ReCreate cut, aligned, and stitched the strips with precision. Reinforcements were then added to ensure stability without compromising the fluidity of the pattern. As a result, the panel offers a scenographic presence and the resilience needed for long-term display. The play of light and shadow created by the micro-perforated strips adds a tactile dimension that invites the viewer to come closer.

In terms of interpretation, Índice invites multiple readings. It may suggest disappearing paths, vanishing points, or even a map of memories. In this way, the work refers both to designer Carla Lopes’ personal memory and to the collective memory of handcraft traditions that are fading over time. The piece therefore functions as both an archive and a manifesto.

Practical information
The piece can be collected at the ReCreate studio in Lisbon or within the Lisbon municipality (location arranged by email). Mounting is the buyer’s responsibility, although an installation quote can be requested from ReCreate. This ensures a safe placement adapted to the exhibition space.
