Norte – Patterns of the World

ReCreate created Norte — Panel 5 using reclaimed compact and micro-perforated billboard mesh. This combination gives the material both physical presence and visual lightness. The composition directly references the cultural universe of northern Portugal: the cut lines and rhythmic pattern recall crochet-covered tables, skilled hands, and the warmth of family memories. The visitor is therefore met with a sense of comfort and a return to one’s roots.

NDuring the making process, ReCreate cut strips of different widths and aligned them to create texture and depth. Stitching techniques were then applied to enhance the textile effect, reinforcing the reference to crochet. The panel offers both a tactile and visual reading, inviting closeness and contemplation. The choice of micro-perforated mesh adds subtle variations of light, accentuating contrasts and creating a dynamic perception depending on the angle of observation.

In terms of meaning, Norte — Panel 5 honours manual traditions that are slowly disappearing. The entire series pays tribute to ancestral handcraft, while each panel reflects a fragment of designer Carla Lopes’ imagination. The numbered and handmade nature of the pieces strengthens the connection between author and work, giving each unit its own singularity. The panel therefore functions as both an exhibition piece and a document of memory.
